Cameron Flat in the Makarora valley, looking north towards the Haast Pass and Mount Brewster (2516 metres). The silver beech forest, surrounding peaks and braided river are home to kea, kererū, rifleman, grey warbler, brown creeper, tomtit, bellbird, fantail, tui, New Zealand falcon, yellow-crowned parakeet, yellowhead, South Island kākā, banded dotterel, South Island pied oystercatcher, black-billed gulls and New Zealand pipit. A Rocha Aotearoa New Zealand runs environmental youth camps, wilderness expeditions and hui in this place of beauty and biodiversity.
